TAX SEASON 2022
Thursday, January 20, 2022 – Just as federal and state offices ready themselves to start accepting tax returns, the comptroller announces an extension to Maryland individual income tax filing and payments.
As of this date, the federal individual income tax filing and payment deadline is April 18, 2022, while the comptroller has extended the Maryland individual income tax filing and payment deadline to July 15, 2022.
The extension is automatic and is intended to ease the financial burden on Maryland resident and nonresident filers due to the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic. No formal extension request is needed, and penalties and interest are waived.
The extension only applies to 2021 Maryland individual income tax returns. Corporate income tax returns and 2022 estimated tax payments will continue to have the normal due dates. However, the comptroller will address extensions for these on a case-by-case basis due to hardship.
